Making Of

Luminara

The Official Site has some text describing Luminara Unduli.

"Luminara Unduli's eyes were oblique and widely spaced, with large blue irises that seemed to favor her upper lids. Her nose was broad and flat, and her skin was the color of fruitwood. Her face was triangular in shape and the lower portion was tattooed in small diamond shapes that formed a vertical stripe from her lush, blue-black lower lip to the tip of her round chin. The backs of her hands also bore tattoos, atop each knuckle joint."

Luminara has a leather tabard hanging from her belt that matches the design on her leather wrist bracers. Below is an image that shows some detail of this.

Here are closeups of Luminara's brooch and the trim on her headdress. These aren't true color, but lightened so you can see the detail. They came from this hi-res image.

Please also see the exhibit pics as there is a ton of detail that has not yet been pulled out of them!

Here is Falls_the_Shadow's preliminary Barriss cloak research. Note on close-ups that Luminara's cloak has a similar pattern in black and brown.

1)It might be embossed velvet. Compare Barriss' cloak with Padme's Blue Cloak that she wears when she and Anakin meet Watto. Padme's cloak is a looser version of the random pattern in a lighter fabric. Official press release kits identified Padme's Blue Cloak as embossed velvet. Velvet would explain how the light changes reflection on the pattern. Embossed by hand with a steam iron into a wrinkle pattern. If you take a Barriss image and put it on negative, you can see that it is a random wrinkle pattern. Here is one of the many web pages on how to emboss velvet: www.bsmithwithstyle.com/home/decor/velvet.htmlHere is a negative crop of the Barriss "yawning" photo:

2) It might be shibori, a traditional Japanese tie-dye technique that has many different patterns. Compare Barriss' pattern to this mokume (wood grain) shibori

Image from http://www.shibori.org/ World Shibori Network website

The common English translation of the Japanese word shibori is "tie-dye"; however, a more accurate translation is "shaped resist dyeing," which describes the inherent patterning process of manipulating the two-dimensional cloth surface into three-dimensional shapes before compressing them to dye.---Many different types of shibori techniques have existed in the world.

3) It might be a combination of both, perhaps velvet dyed shibori style then heated. Some shibori techniques use heat to set the dye. Trisha has continued the SW tradition of mixing elements of formal attire from different cultures and centuries. For example, TPM: Amidala's Pre-senate outfit (when Palpatine visits her) has the obvious Japanese kimono and obi, but her headdress is modeled after the imperial pearl headpiece of the Byzantine Empresses and Emperors:

Empress Theodora and Her Court, in mosaic c. 547, San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy made during Byzantine rule in Italy

And in AOTC: Amidala's blue senate gown is in anElizabethan style, yet the headdress traditional African.

Here is Nora's tutorial.

Barriss

Barriss wears a long dress. The top is made from a sort of ribbed fabric. Barriss' belt has a heart shape on it. Her cloak has a big hood, with a closer fitting hood underneath that covers her head and neck - it looks like a wool with maybe an animal print, and not a burnout velvet. You can see this in these crops from the new Official Pics prints.

There is new information out there on Barriss Offee's costume - unfortunately I don't have any pics I can post here, but I do have some beautiful sketches, courtesy of Bridgette. (Thanks Bridgette!)

The back of the robe is the biggest surprise. It is yoked, with 4 large pleats on each side of center back. At the shoulders and falling over the yoke is patterned robe fabric, along with an insert of dark blue/gray fabric! It matches the background color of the patterned fabric. You can see it on Bridgette's drawing as the shaded bit coming off the left shoulder, and you can see it peaking out on the right. I'm not exactly certain how this is constructed!

The top is made out of some sort of ribbed fabric and it has seems in the front that make it look like two pieces. It is tight fitted, like a spandex knit. The skirt doesn't look ribbed and the lower skirt, below the hips, has some drape to it.

JediNet had an interview with Nalini Krishan and I've excerpted the bits concerning her costume.

"Question: Did you like your costumes and makeup? Many fans, myself included, were happy to see Jedi wearing something other than those dour brown robes and attire we have seen on previous Jedi Knights.

Answer: I did not know what to expect but the outfits were fantastic. They were elegant and mysterious and certainly suited the character that I played. The make up was fantastic and original. The designers certainly came up with something very creative.

Q: Did you choose your own lightsaber or get to play around with one?

A: I certainly did, in fact I got to play around with it too much, to the point where I could not move my arms the next day!

Q: What did you think of the photo that appeared of you in the French Star Wars Insider?

A: It looks like I am yawning! Trust me I look a lot better in real life, and when my hand was away from the face you can see me a lot better. Barris is a humble servant that would die for her master. She is courageous and defiant too bad the photo does not show this!
